What is roof leadwork?

Lead can be formed around changes in shape and level, making it useful for intricate roof details. Its understated grey finish also sits comfortably alongside traditional slate and brickwork.
Why the fitting matters
A neat appearance is only part of good leadwork. The material needs suitable support, correctly arranged overlaps and secure fixings. It must also have room to expand and contract as temperatures change. Restricting that movement can put stress on the lead and contribute to splitting.

When should you have it checked?
Visible splits, lifted flashing or gaps where lead meets masonry are reasons to arrange an inspection. Damp around a chimney breast or staining after rain also deserves attention, although leadwork is only one possible cause.
